An AI social media manager for a small business

What an AI can genuinely take over on a business Instagram and Facebook account in 2026, and what it cannot, however much the advert promises.

    The short answer

Yes, but not just any AI. An AI chat writes text when you ask, but running a business's social media takes a service built for it: one that knows your business, decides what goes out this week, writes the captions in your own voice, picks photos from your library and publishes them on time. Bobbi was built for exactly this, together with small business owners. Even that cannot photograph your work, know what happened in your business yesterday unless you tell it, or hold the real conversation with your customer. So in practice, social media that is handled means this: the content happens without you, but the photos and the final approval stay with you.

What an AI can do on a business account

This has moved quickly. A few years ago an AI could mostly polish text whose subject you had already chosen yourself. The repeating parts of the job can now be handed to an AI almost entirely. When it comes to social media, though, not all of it works with an ordinary AI chat: it takes a service built for this work. Bobbi was built together with small business owners, and it can:

    • Plan the week's subjects so the same thing doesn't come round every time, and so offers, work samples and lighter posts alternate sensibly.
    • Write the captions in a voice learned from your past posts, your website and the feedback you give.
    • Pick a photo for each post from the material you have uploaded, and crop it to the right shape.
    • Schedule posts for times when your followers are actually around.
    • Keep the rhythm going through the weeks when you would not have given it a thought.

What an AI cannot do, whatever the advert promises

Adverts easily promise too much. If a service claims to run your social media completely without you giving it anything, what you get in practice is stock photography and captions that would suit any business.

An AI does not go and photograph your work. It does not know that a new machine arrived yesterday or that next week has unusual hours, unless you say so. Nor does it know your customers the way you do.

Nor should it hold the real conversation with a customer for you. That conversation often decides whether a customer becomes a regular, and a wrong automated reply costs more than a slower human one.

An AI or a social media manager?

Alongside an AI, many people consider hiring a social media manager or buying the work from an agency. They do the same job, so they are worth comparing side by side.

A person understands situations, asks the follow-up questions and handles the conversations with your customers. That usually costs hundreds or thousands a month, and you have to get them up to speed and keep them supplied with material.

A well-built AI service does the same job for a fraction of that and keeps your posting rhythm going through busy weeks too. Bobbi, for example, draws up a content strategy and makes the posts for a campaign or event when you tell it about one. From you it needs the photos, what is currently going on in your business and your approval, and the conversations with customers stay with you. If you need paid advertising, bigger brand work or a person to talk to customers, hire the person.

What handled social media means in practice

The division of labour that works is clear. You bring what only you have: photos of the real work and knowledge of what is happening in the business. Bobbi brings what you never get to: the rhythm, the subjects and the captions.

In practice that means you open Bobbi once a week and a drafted week is waiting. You read it, change what you want and approve. Bobbi learns from everything you do: every edit, every piece of feedback and how your posts perform.

It does not mean you can forget the account exists. If that is what you are looking for, the honest answer is that it does not exist at any price, as software or as a person.

The levels at which an AI can run an account

All of these get called AI, and they mean very different things.

    OptionWhat it costsWho it suits
An AI assistant in the compose boxFree, or included in a tool you already useWrites the text when you ask. You pick the subject, find the photo and publish. Helps with writing, not with time.
An AI chat such as ChatGPTFree, or around 20 euros a monthProduces good text, but only once you ask and explain the background again. On a week you forget to ask, nothing happens. There is a fuller breakdown in the ChatGPT comparison.
An AI that generates graphicsTens of euros a monthMakes striking graphics quickly. They look like adverts, and on a small business account a real photo of real work stops the thumb better.
BobbiTens of euros a month, plus photos from youThe closest thing to handled: the week is drafted without you asking. Built together with small business owners for exactly this job. Needs your photos and your approval.

    Common questions

Will customers notice the posts were made with AI?

They probably will if the posts were made with a tool that was not built for this. The giveaways are stock photos, language that is too smooth, and captions that would suit any business in the same trade. Bobbi was built to avoid exactly those: it learns your voice from your website, your past posts and every correction you make, and builds posts around your own photos instead of stock images. That is why the result sounds like you rather than like an AI.

Can an AI reply to comments and messages?

Some tools reply to comments and messages automatically, but Bobbi does not answer your customers for you. A conversation with a customer often decides whether they become a regular, and an automated reply in the wrong place is a more expensive mistake than a late one. So comments and messages stay with you.

Can an AI actually sound like me?

The difference is not the model, it is what the model has to learn from. A chat you prompt knows nothing about your business, so it gives you something that could belong to anyone. Bobbi reads your website, your past posts and every correction you make, and writes from those. The more you correct, the closer it gets, and the last word is always yours.

What if I don't give it any photos?

Not necessarily at first: Bobbi pulls usable photos from your website into your library, so if your site has good images, the first posts are built from those. The best posts still come from fresh photos of your own working day, because those are what stop someone scrolling. When photos start running low, Bobbi tells you and suggests what kind of photos to add. A few phone photos a week go a long way.
